How the BMI Calculator Works

Body mass index compares weight with height using the standard BMI formula. The UtilFarm BMI calculator supports both US and metric units, then maps the result to adult BMI categories: underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.

BMI is useful as a quick screening tool, but it does not directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, pregnancy, age-related body composition, or individual medical history. Use the result as a starting point for a broader health conversation.

Method reference: adult BMI categories follow the CDC adult BMI category ranges.

BMI categories are adult screening ranges. Talk with a qualified clinician before making health decisions.

BMI ranges, healthy weight, and what the number means

Adult BMI Categories

Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to less than 25 is healthy weight, 25 to less than 30 is overweight, and 30 or greater is obesity. Obesity is commonly subdivided into class 1, class 2, and class 3.

Healthy Weight Range

The range shown by this calculator solves the BMI formula backward for BMI 18.5 and 24.9 at your selected height. It is an estimate, not a personalized medical target.

BMI Limitations

BMI does not distinguish fat from muscle and may be less informative for athletes, older adults, pregnant people, and people with unusual body composition. Combine it with other health indicators.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. In US units, BMI is weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703.

What BMI range is healthy for adults?

For adults 20 and older, the healthy weight range is 18.5 to less than 25. Under 18.5 is underweight, 25 to less than 30 is overweight, and 30 or greater is obesity.

Is BMI a diagnosis?

No. BMI is a screening measure. It is best interpreted alongside body composition, waist circumference, history, and guidance from a qualified clinician.
